Distressing Tale of Thangobrind the Jeweller pg 8 by deankotz Distressing Tale of Thangobrind the Jeweller pg 8 by deankotz
The final page of my adaptation of Lord Dunsany's short story.  Tolkien famously criticized pretty much the entire story and especially that final paragraph.  I understand why: it breaks the spell and is completely incongruous with the rest of the story.  But Dunsany really wasn't in the world building business.  For him fantasy worlds existed on the other side of every window or behind shop doors down little side streets.  I won't say Tolkien was wrong, but I always loved that final paragraph.  Partly as a prose poem, but also because it so wonderfully gives a sense of longing and lost time.  What better feelings for the end of a fantasy story?  I couldn't resist including it in its entirety.

This little adaptation was just a personal exercise...sadly, no one's paying me to adapt early 20th century fantasy stories.  I did layouts and scribbled some notes for the adaptation years ago, and then forgot about 'em.  During a dry spell a year or so later, I tightened them up, and then forgot about 'em.  Recently a friend of mine asked if I had ever read Dunsany, and I said, "Oh, sure...heck, I was working on an adaptation..."

Well, whatever the results, at least I can say I finished it.   :)

I'm gonna print these up and read them that way.

I have not read the story but always appreciate a writer doing things their way, good or bad, so let Tolkien take his opinion and....

Can't wait to see your next project.
